Recently phone scammers have been calling homes in Bloomington posing as Duke Energy employees. They tell local residents that they are delinquent, or late, on their bill and threaten to turn off their power. These scammers are capable of altering caller ID so that it appears that the call is coming from Duke Energy. The scammers request that residents put money on a prepaid debit card and then read the card number to them over the phone, according to a press release. The press release suggests that callers be wary of this information should they receive a phone call that appears to be from the energy company. “Duke Energy will NEVER call to demand immediate payment about money owed without first sending you a notification by mail, or ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone,” the press release states. Should a person receive a call that they find suspicious, the company advises hanging up and contacting them directly using the number that can be found on their website.
