IU swept in final series of season

In its last regular season series of the season, the IU softball team dropped all three games against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus this weekend.

In the first game on Friday, the Hoosiers fell to the Buckeyes by the final score of 7-0. The IU offense was only able to tally up four hits through the entire game.

Senior Lora Olson picked up the loss, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits in a short outing.

The only run given up by Olson was in the first inning on a RBI single to center to give the Buckeyes the 1-0 lead. However, the Buckeyes never looked back, scoring six more run throughout the game on a pair of RBI doubles, a sac fly and a homerun to give the Buckeyes a game one victory over IU.

Saturday, the Buckeyes took the series by winning game two against the Hoosiers by a final score of 17-2 in just four inning of play.

Olson would pick up her second straight loss for the Hoosiers, giving up seven runs, six of which were earned on nine hits and two walks in 3.1 innings pitched.

The buckeyes offense would explode during this game, not only striking first in the game with a RBI single in the first inning, but also would add four runs in the second and ten runs in third.

The Hoosiers offense however, would only push two runs across the plate, both coming in the first inning off a two-run RBI triple from freshman Rebecca Blitz. The Hoosiers would only tally three hits in a four inning run-ruled game.

In the series finale on Sunday, the Buckeye’s completed the sweep of the Hoosiers by taking game three by the final score of 6-3.

The Buckeyes scored the first four runs in the game, connecting on a pair homeruns, and RBI single and an RBI bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0 after two inning of play.

In the top of the third inning, freshman Rachel O’Malley and junior Kelsey Dotson would pull IU closer as they both hit solo homeruns to cut the Buckeye lead in half, 4-2.

After senior Brianna Meyer made it 4-3 on an RBI flyout, the Hoosiers would fail to get anymore runs, while Ohio State added two more in the sixth on a homerun and a bases-loaded walk to give them a 6-3 victory and the sweep of the Hoosiers.

This was the last attempt for the Hoosiers to try and move up in the standings before the Big Ten Tournament, but shortly after the game, it was announced that they Hoosiers will have to square off against the Ohio state Buckeyes again in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday starting at 5:30.

The game can be seen on Big Ten Network.
