Man arrested on gun, marijuana charges

Willis D. North-Lucas, 23, was arrested Saturday evening on preliminary charges of owning a handgun without a license, possession of marijuana and driving while suspended, according to a Bloomington Police Department arrest report.

A BPD officer observed a tan-colored Chevrolet Cavalier traveling northbound on Walnut Street at approximately 40 mph in a 30-mph zone. The vehicle then failed to signal it was turning left at the intersection of South Walnut Street and West Grimes Lane. The officer made a traffic stop on the vehicle, identified North-Lucas as the driver and ran his driver’s license in the BPD in-car computer system to discover that North-Lucas’ license was suspended.

North-Lucas advised the officer that he had a small amount of marijuana in his vehicle and that there was also a .45 caliber handgun inside. The officer asked North-Lucas to exit the vehicle then discovered less than 30 grams of marijuana in the vehicle and a handgun under the passenger’s side floorboard. A smoking device was found in North-Lucas’ pocket.

He was arrested and remanded to Monroe County Jail.
