The Indiana University Hurryin’ Hoosiers built up a big first half lead in the season’s last game last night, and then held on to barely win, 76-68 over Northwestern. 

Indiana led by 15 at halftime, 14-29, but steadily lost ground in the second half. Indiana’s biggest margin was 48-31 with a minute and a half gone in the second half, but the Wildcats started working harder on the boards, and scored eight straight points to make the score 48-41.

Northwestern several times cut the Indiana lead to five in the next 10 minutes of play, but the Hoosiers held the Wildcats off largely on the scoring of the Van Arsdale twins and Steve Redenbaugh.

Northwestern made its big move with about six minutes left. Bob Wood cut the Indiana lead to two, 66-64, with a twenty foot jump shot, and after Al Harden scored for Indiana, Wood scored again to pull the Wildcats to within two once more. 

Northwestern had the ball three times with a chance to tie the game, but couldn’t make the tieing basket. Jon McGlocklin scored a fielder for the Hoosiers, and the Wildcats never again came any closer than three points.

Dick VanArsdale and McGlocklin both scored 20 points to lead the Hoosiers. Tom VanArsdale was third in scoring with 15, and Redenbaugh fourth with 14. 

Northwestern had a balanced scoring attack. Lopossa led with 14, and Rick Falk, Don Jackson, and Marty Riessen had 12, 11, and 10 respectively.

Indiana hit 28 of 78 field goal attempts for a .359 average; Northwestern hit at almost the same percentage, .347, on 26 of 75. Indiana hit 20 of 25 free throw attempts and the Wildcats hit 16 of 23. 

The game got off to a slow start. Phil Keeley hit a jump shot for Northwestern with a minute and a half gone, and neither team scored again until McGlocklin scored for Indiana with almost four minutes gone in the game. 

I.U. led.

The Wildcats led briefly, 6-3, but I.U. came back to lead 7-6 with seven minutes gone in the half. I.U. led 14-11 with 10 minutes left in the half.

After this the Hoosiers quickly built up a nine point lead, and maintained
