IU senior Elizabeth Tong was selected as one of eight golfers to represent Team Canada as part of the 2015 National Amateur Squad program.
Tong, of Thornhill, Ontario, joins North Carolina State’s Brittany Marchand, Kent State’s Jennifer Ha and Texas A&M’s Maddie Szeryk to be named to the women’s team.
The selection is Tong’s first to Team Canada’s Women’s Amateur team. In the summer prior to her senior season, she competed in the U.S. and Canadian Women’s Open and advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Tong posted top-25 finishes in four events during the fall, highlighted by a tie for sixth at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, TX. She posted low rounds of 68 twice, including her last competitive round of the fall at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
As a junior, Tong finished second on the team in scoring average at 76.76. She finished with five top-25 finishes, which included a season-best tournament at the Westbrook Invitational where she finished in a tie for sixth. Tong’s two lowest rounds of the year came at the Westbrook Invitational where she shot 71-70 in her first two rounds.
In July, Tong was joined by now-junior teammates Camille Chevalier in being named All-American Scholars by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association, which required a minimum GPA of 3.5.
IU is still in the midst of its winter break from competitive play, but Tong will join her teammates back on the course Feb. 15 to Feb. 17 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
