IU senior safety Mark Murphy earned a place on the Capital One Academic All-American team for the second-consecutive year, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
An informatics major, Murphy has a 3.85 grade point average at the IU School of Informatics. He is also a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, which is annually awarded to college football’s top student athlete.
Murphy is the third Hoosier to be named to the Academic All-American team twice, joining Will Meyers and John Hammerstein. In total, nine IU players have been selected to the list in program history.
Murphy finished his career with 279 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, four interceptions and two touchdowns off of interceptions. He made 11 starts this past season, only missing one game due to injury.
The safety that freshman Chase Dutra said he calls “Grandpa” had 49 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and two picks for an IU team that finished 4-8 overall in his final season.
Murphy said he was still unsure of what he was going to do with his degree. He said a professional football career is still a possibility, but he planned to make that decision within the next few months.
Three high school commits named All-State
All three in-state commits for IU football were named to the AP All-State team Thursday.
