Ferrell named to Wooden Award watch list

IU junior guard Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell has been added to the John Wooden Award watch list, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Monday.

The Wooden Award annually goes to the nation’s best college basketball player. The initial list of 50 athletes was selected by a poll of national college basketball experts.

Ferrell, an Indianapolis native, was previously named to the Cousy Award watch list for college basketball’s best point guard.

Ferrell is one of seven Big Ten players to be named to the list, joining Michigan State’s Branden Dawson, Wisconsin’s Sam Dekker and Frank Kaminsky, Michigan’s Caris LeVert, Nebraska’s Terran Petteway and Maryland’s Dez Wells.

The last IU player to win the award was Calbert Cheaney in 1993.

Former Hoosiers Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo were both finalists for the Wooden Award during the 2012-13 season.

The list will be reduced to 25 players in January, and the finalists will be announced in March. Players who were not included on the previous list can still be added in the next round just as former IU standout Victor Oladipo was in 2012-13.
