Local man charged with aggravated battery

A 41-year-old Bloomington man was arrested around 3:30 a.m. July 9, after a dispute with his girlfriend, according to the Bloomington Police Department.

Paul McCown was booked in Monroe County Jail and faces charges of felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor theft.

Ambulance crews found a large gash in the back of the female victim’s head as well as various bruises after the incident, but she declined medical treatment.

A male witness said McCown was intoxicated at a gathering at the female’s apartment near 3100 S. Walnut St. Pike. The witness also said McCown had a history of being violent while intoxicated.

Later, everyone left the apartment except for McCown, his girlfriend and the male. McCown wrapped a large metal chain with a padlock around his fist. He cornered the male and began hitting him in the chest.

McCown’s girlfriend tried to intervene, but McCown pushed her over a couch and began hitting her. The male left the apartment at that time.

Later, at about 2:45 a.m., the female came to the male’s apartment upset. She said she had an argument with McCown about her stealing his property, which she denied doing.

The victim said McCown hit her in the back of the head, at which point she passed out. When she woke up, McCown was gone, along with her cell phone. She came to the male’s apartment to call the police.

Police located McCown at the Village Pantry near the intersection of Winslow Road and Henderson Street. McCown returned his girlfriend’s phone and police transported him to jail.
