Mosquera-Perea in jail for OWI

IU basketball player Hanner Mosquera-Perea was held in Monroe County Jail Friday after he was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol causing endangerment.

According to a jail bookings report, Mosquera-Perea was arrested at 4:45 a.m. today, with a blood alcohol content of .15.

At about 3 in the morning Friday, IU Police Department Officer Kyle Moulden noticed a 2008 Black Acura MDX traveling southbound with its left turn signal flashing at the intersection of 3rd St. and Dunn St. The eastbound turn would send the vehicle into oncoming traffic on a one-way street.

According to Lt. Craig Munroe of IUPD, Moulden then began to follow the vehicle as it flipped off the turn signal and entered tentatively into the intersection.

Once Mosquera-Perea moved onto Atwater Ave., he struck a curb, but continued to drive. He proceeded to Atwater Ave. and Ballantine Rd. where he struck a second curb. After this incident, Moulden proceeded to pull Mosquera-Perea over. Upon approaching the vehicle, Lt. Munroe said  Moulden detected an odor of alcohol.

Officer Hutchens of the Monroe County Correctional Center told the Indiana Daily Student over the phone that Mosquera-Perea was arrested on charges of two misdemeanors — OWI Endangerment because there was a passenger in the vehicle, and OWI Per Se, because he had a BAC of .15 or higher.

IU Coach Tom Crean announced via his Twitter account Friday that Mosquera-Perea would not travel with the team for Saturday's game at Purdue.

Mosquera-Perea has been suspended indefinitely, Crean said.

"Hanner has let his family, loved ones and our program down and he knows that with choices come consequences," Crean said in a tweet. "The law will handle some as will we. he will not be with us at Purdue and we will continue to work with him on a daily business and will be withheld from competition indefinitely."
