The graduation of a four-time All-Big Ten player and rainstorms could
not slow down the IU women’s tennis team in its first tournament of the
season.
The Hoosiers welcomed Cincinnati, Eastern Michigan,
Kansas State and Western Michigan to Bloomington for the Hoosier Classic
over the weekend.
The tournament was organized by four singles
flights that spanned across the three-day tournament. There was only one
doubles flight and doubles play finished Saturday.
Seven IU players achieved perfect singles records. As a team, the Hoosiers were 23-5 in singles play.
Juniors
Alecia Kauss and Katie Klyczek, as well as senior Sophie Garre,
represented IU in the “crimson draw.” All three women were undefeated
during the weekend.
Redshirt junior Kayla Fujimoto, who had not
donned the cream and crimson in competitive play since April 27, 2012
due to an injury, and freshman Kim Schmider were a combined 5-0 in the
“purple draw.”
Junior Shannon Murdy was the champion of the “gold draw” and junior Gabrielle Rubenstein took the crown in the “green draw.”
In doubles play, IU won 16 matches.
IU
will have nearly a two-week break before its next tournament. The
Hoosiers will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to play in the Vanderbilt
Invitational. The Commodores eliminated the Hoosiers in the first round
of IU’s past two NCAA tournament appearances.
