Warrent issued for animal cruelty

A warrant has been issued for a 49-year-old man for animal cruelty after his dog died from being left in the man’s vehicle with the windows rolled up, Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Joe Crider said.

On July 22 at approximately 4:12p.m., officers responded to the area of 6th St. and Morton Ave. in reference to a report of a distressed dog left inside a parked vehicle with the windows rolled up.

The complainants, a 37-year-old female and a 38-year-old female, reported the incident after seeing the black Labrador retriever inside a black Honda Accord.

Officers found the 9-year-old dog inside the Honda Accord displaying signs of distress and seizing, Crider said.

Animal Control responded and arrived at roughly the same time, approximately 4:45p.m., as the owner of the vehicle, a 49-year-old male.

The owner of the vehicle reported to officers that it was his vehicle and his dog and that he has been inside Crazy Horse Food and Drink Emporium for approximately an hour, police said.

He reported to officers that he went inside Crazy Horse at approximately 2:30p.m. and left the dog secured in the car with the windows rolled up due to rain. He reported to officers that he thought the dog would be fine inside the vehicle, police said.

The dog was taken to Town and Country Veterinary Clinic where the veterinarian staff reported that the dog had an internal core temperature of 110 degrees when it arrived.

The dog died after arriving to the clinic which staff believed to be due to heat related issues, police said.

A warrant has been issued for the 49-year-old male’s arrest.
