IU Police Academy recruits attended a rescheduled live demonstration of explosives Wednesday at the former IU Outdoor Firearms Range.

The demonstration was originally scheduled for June 5, but was cancelled when the bomb squad was called away to deal with a situation in Hancock County.

A 17-year-old boy was reportedly tampering with a pipe bomb his elder brother had made when it exploded, injuring him.

The live explosives demonstration was designed to give the Academy recruits a practical understanding of explosives and the impact they have in real-world situations, according to a press release.

A classroom session was held on June 5, during which the Indiana State Police Explosive Team presented videos of different types of explosive devices and the means of delivery, such as pipe bombs and improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, according to the release.

Some of the items displayed were confiscated from around the state.
