Recently graduated IU students win $100,000 for future

The winners of the Building Entrepreneurs in Software and Technology competition this past February were awarded $250,000, the largest amount of prize money given by a university solely to its students in a business plan competition. The competition is organized through the School of Informatics and Computing and the Kelley School of Business.

Those participating had to submit a summary of their business and then a complete plan. The teams were then required to organize 20-minute presentations to give in front of a panel of judges composed of investors and others affiliated with IU. A 10-minute question and answer session followed.

Recently graduated students Eric Wertenberger and Devin Powell were one of two first-prize-winning teams, receiving $100,000 for their company, Fandio.

Fandio aims to provide sports fans with a different way of viewing games.

Wertenberger said the site is for both broadcasting and streaming alternative sports commentaries. Those who participate will be able to interact and comment through the website and mobile app.

Podcasters, such as The Fantasy Football Guys, have agreed to try broadcasts on Fandio.fm.

Powell said the idea was formed through watching people view sports games while utilizing smart devices and social media as part of their experience. People often tweet their reactions or analysis of sports games as they are happening. According to their executive summary, 40 percent of viewers are using these devices to enhance their experience.

Through Fandio, participants will not be limited to just 140 characters and will be able to interact on a much deeper level, Powell said.

He said they are excited to get started.

“We’re just kind of real thankful to IU,” Powell said. “It is a really unique opportunity for IU students.”

Wertenberger said they plan to complete the site by the start of football season.
