Fast and Furious 6

Fast and Furious 6

For those who quit watching the “Fast and Furious” franchise after the abysmal “Tokyo Drift,” I am happy to inform you that the saga has redeemed itself with its sixth installment. Not only is this six-quel the best “Fast and Furious” film to date, it is thoroughly entertaining and will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Just make sure you leave your brain at home.

Director Justin Lin has perfected the recipe of a summer blockbuster, pulling away from the duo nature of the first four films and settling comfortably into the ensemble style, including all of our favorite characters from the previous films. While “Fast Five” was a blatant “Ocean’s Eleven” knock-off, “Furious 6” retains the heist-team element, but provides an original story that won’t leave you looking for George Clooney.

This time around, the team is up against Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), who makes a great villain, especially once we find out that not-so-dead Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is alive and working for him.

The squad teams up to take down Shaw, working for Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) to receive full pardons for all the damage they’ve done over the years.

Even though “Furious 6” is a great movie, don’t expect there to be any in-depth personality profiles or thoughtful stories. That has never been the point of this saga, and they aren’t interested in changing their mantra now. The “Fast and Furious” franchise is unapologetically about explosions, campy attitudes, sex and — of course — the cars. Is it hard to believe at times? Yes. Does that matter? Of course not. Grab some popcorn and lose yourself for a couple of hours. “Furious 6” is sure to be a fun ride.
