SPEA dean to publish book on poverty trends

This month, IU Press will publish IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs Dean John Graham’s book, “America’s Poor and the Great Recession,” which examines recent trends in poverty and the performance of the United States’ “safety net” programs.

The book was co-authored by Kristin Seefeldt, a former SPEA professor, and includes a forward by national talk show host and SPEA alumni Tavis Smiley.

Both will join IU-Purdue University Indianapolis School of Public and Environmental Affairs on Tuesday at the Lumina Foundation in Indianapolis for a panel discussion concerning the changing face of poverty. Panelists will focus on the effect of poverty in Indiana and discuss possible solutions.

On Jan. 17, Smiley and Graham will also take part in a nationally televised discussion titled “Vision for a New America: A Future Without Poverty” at George Washington University.

“America’s Poor and the Great Recession” will be available Jan. 29.
