The 411 on Bloomington events

Friday
Nationally recognized design firm specialist Wendy Pressley-Jacobs will present a lecture called “When Vision Acts: Thoughtful Communications” at 5 p.m. in Fine Arts Building room 102. A reception outside the Grunwald Gallery will take place at 6 p.m. following the lecture. Pressley Johnson  Design, her associated firm, has worked in design for more than 25 years.  

The Grunwald Gallery of Art will showcase the work of former students in the “SoFA Revisited” exhibition from 6 to 8 p.m. A panel discussion will kick off the evening’s art at 4 p.m.  
This exhibit, which features work from nine alumnus who graduated within the past 15 years,  is the first of its kind at the SoFA Gallery. All events are free and open to the public.  

“Global Perspectives” — the IU Dance Theatre will have an international-themed modern dance performance 7:30 p.m. at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors, children and IU students if purchased at the door.

Organ Recital at Auer Hall — Students of Bruce Neswick will put their organ skills on display and perform at 8 p.m.

The Eric Lambert Band at Max’s Place — A flatpicking specialist from Chicago, Eric Lambert has been performing, recording and teaching music for more than 40 years. The show starts at 9 p.m., and the cover is $3.

Waxeater at The Bishop — Late-night owls will rejoice at The Bishop’s supershow this weekend. Billed with an 11:58 p.m. start time according to The Bishop’s website, Bloomington’s Waxeater will demonstrate their thunderous sound on 123 S. Walnut St. Anwar Sadat, a Louisville, Ky., band that shares its name with the third president of Egypt, will join the lineup with special guests Grayces, a female-fronted punk band from Nashville, Tenn.
The cover is $2 and strictly 21+.

Saturday

“Global Perspectives” — the IU Dance Theatre will have an international-themed modern dance performance 7:30 p.m. at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors, children and IU students if purchased at the door.

Boogie Basement Vinyl Record Dance Party at The Root Cellar — The Root Cellar (under FarmBloomington) will play a collection of funk, soul, hip-hop and new wave starting at 10 p.m. Requests are welcome.

Underground Hip-Hop at The Bishop — Chicago-based group Quel and Maker will headline an evening of underground hip-hop at 10:30 p.m. Saturday at The Bishop. Bloomington area MCs 3rd Eye Visionaries, L-Ion and DJ Spikes will also perform. Admission is $5 and 21+.

The Main Squeeze at The Bluebird — Bloomington-based funk group The Main Squeeze will take the stage at 10 p.m. Saturday night at the Bluebird Nightclub. Anything but strangers to the venue, the band released a self-titled album last summer and showcases complex jazz fusion.

Sunday
Free Jazz at The Bishop — In “Jazz at the Bishop Vol. 1,” four jazz musicians will set up in front of the bar area itself. This free show starts at 8 p.m., though the bar opens at 7 p.m.
