The Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a three-day symposium about human rights Oct. 10-12.
The center, which was created by Herman B Wells and IU alumnus Nelson Poynter in 1972, exists for the study of ethical and political issues, according to a press release.
The symposium will include speakers from across the United States, including University of Maryland Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy scholar David Alan Crocker, American University professor of international law Diane Orentlicher and Florida State University professor Sumner Twiss.
There will be a reception next Thursday at the Poynter Center.
“The Poynter Center provides a unique venue at IU for critically analyzing society’s most pressing ethical questions,” Poynter Center Director Richard Miller said in a press release. “Our inquiry regularly examines such questions in both theory and practice. Whether the topic under scrutiny is health care, scientific research, politics or religion, the Poynter Center takes an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to asking hard questions about why humans — as individuals or in groups — act as we do.”
