Green initiative conserves 7 million gallons of water

IU saved 7.77 million gallons of water during the Million Gallon Challenge, which began Sept. 1.

The results compared water usage for September 2011-12.

“IU students, faculty and staff rose to the challenge and exceeded our million-gallon goal in the first week,” Director of Sustainability Bill Brown said in a press release.

IU Athletics decreased water usage by 25 percent. Hillcrest Apartments, Teter Quad, the psychology building, the Mathers Museum of World Cultures and the International Center all saved 20 percent or more.

IU saved more than $70,000 during the observed period.

Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities Tom Morrison said he was pleased with student, staff and faculty response to the water emergency brought on by summer drought.

“Some of the innovative strategies and new habits learned will persist, and that is the best part of this success story.”
