School of Education Dean Gerardo Gonzales has been named a lay member of the state Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs.
Gonzales, who became dean in 2000, is known for his expertise in alcohol and drug education. He has published works in the areas of the Cuban-American experience and Hispanic educational concerns.
In 2003, Gonzales was the recipient of the IU Latino Faculty and Staff Service Award. He was honored for his strives toward educational equity and access for underrepresented groups.
“I am honored to be appointed to this important commission,” Gonzales said in a press release. “The Hispanic/Latino population is the fastest growing demographic group in the United States and Indiana. As with other immigrant and minority groups in the past, education is the key to their economic advancement and social success.”
As part of the commission, Gonzales will help address issues in the Latino community, particularly in the areas of child care, education and youth crime recidivism.
