During spring break, the No. 57 Hoosiers had only one match, which occurred March 9. IU lost its Big Ten opener to arch rival No. 38 Purdue by the score of 6-1.
The women’s tennis team surrendered half a point in the Crimson and Gold Cup.
The Hoosiers’ record now stands at 11-4 on the season, and the loss means they have gone just 1-4 against ranked competition this year.
In doubles action, the Boilermakers took two of the three matches to take the first point of the match.
The lone victory point for the Hoosiers was in the No. 1 slot as junior Leslie Hureau took down her opponent in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Other than Hureau’s win, it was a bleak day for the Hoosiers.
Senior Evgeniya Vertesheva and freshman Katie Klyczek lost in straight sets in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, respectively.
The other three remaining singles matches were all tightly contested three-set battles, all of which Purdue won.
Freshman Carolyn Chupa and sophomores Kayla Fujimoto and Sophie Garre could not squeak out the victories. Chupa and Garre were ousted in the tiebreak of the third set.
Fujimoto’s defeat snaps her perfect 11-0 start to the season in singles play.
As a result of the loss, the Hoosiers dropped 16 slots in the ITA team rankings from the previous week.
This past week, the Hoosiers enjoyed their last bye week of the season. From here, IU will square off against Big Ten competition every weekend for the remainder of the semester.
