Study reveals impact of University, IU Health on state economy

President McRobbie makes announcement during Board of Trustees two-day meeting

IU President Michael McRobbie and Daniel Evans, President and Chief Executive Officer of IU Health, announced today the results of a study concerning the impact of the University and IU Health on Indiana’s economy during the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

The study, conducted by economic impact analysis firm Tripp Umbach, revealed IU and IU Health generated more than $11.5 billion in economic impact for the state of Indiana. McRobbie said he defined “economic impact” in this sense as dollars generated and spend as a result of the presence of the University and IU Health.

As the state’s largest employer, IU and IU Health also account for nearly 100,000 jobs in the state of Indiana.

The study also noted the economic contributions of the nearly 265,000 IU alumni residing in the state of Indiana, whose income is largely spent in-state, according to a press release by the University.

“This is a spectacular example of the sum of the parts being greater than the whole,” Evans said in a public statement, adding he considers the University’s partnership with IU Health the “special sauce” that separates IU from other universities.

The announcement was made as part of the IU Board of Trustees two-day meeting, which convened Thursday on the IU-Purdue University campus. The meeting will continue into tomorrow.
