Palin back in the spotlight

Her name in lights... again.

Whether or not you were paying attention, it was impossible to ignore Sarah Palin’s rise to stardom during the 2008 presidential election.

If you were finally ready and able to forget the obnoxious would-be vice president, you’re in for some bad news. HBO Films is releasing a movie about the 2008 election and the part Palin played in changing the the political landscape.

The film, titled “Game Change,” has been criticized by Palin’s aide staff for providing an ill-informed view of the former Alaskan governor.

It portrays the woman as something of a basket case, which coincides with most liberal and popular portrayals of Palin.

At the same time, Palin herself is less than fazed by the whole thing, most likely indicating that even bad press is better than no press at all. The true question is not whether Palin is insulted by the movie, because who cares what she thinks anymore?

What really matters is what audiences can take away from this movie.

If you’re going to see this movie for its dramatic political insight, you will most likely be disappointed. On the other hand, if you are interested in a good laugh, have at it.

“Game Change” seems to be one of those special films that have something for everyone.

You can go into this film with the intention of seeing an Oscar-quality presentation of the complexity of the election and an allegedly imbalanced portrayal of what Palin endured during the campaign.

Or you can go into this film to watch a self-serious train wreck whose trailer induces laughter.

Julianne Moore looks the part of the carpool driving, working-class mom turned VP candidate, but the one-liners we’ve already seen, including such political hysterics as her Russia-spying from a bedroom window, should leave your side splitting.

These attempt at dramatics should leave us begging for more. Think about it: This is the “Twilight” of political biopics (and you were probably expecting that to be “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”).

The ridiculousness of the vampire saga, like Palin’s campaign trail, is often more entertaining than the compelling drama that was intended.

For every moviegoer who is expecting a heart-throbbing love story, there are at least two who are going for a good laugh. Maybe only a serious portrayal of Palin could give us laughs equal to a vampire and werewolf fighting for their high school sweetheart.

After all, what’s the difference between a vampire and a soccer mom? Lipstick.
