Singer-songwriter Ben Kweller releases his fifth album “Go Fly a Kite” by presenting a more upbeat sound.
Kweller returned after a three-year studio hiatus to debut a more production-heavy, but more mature sound. With songs such as “Mean to Me,” “Full Circle” and “You Can Count on Me,” Kweller brings his signature emotion, but with a new punch of pop.
Kweller’s diversified sound reflects his exploration into new genres. “Mean to Me” brings his usual exuberance, packaging it in a poppy style.
In albums such as 2006’s self-titled album, he placed his frustration into simpler melodies, focusing on lyrics.
However, in “Kite,” Kweller explores these feelings through an intensified sound versatility.
Kweller never parts from his signature rustic, pseudo-country sound, as evidenced by “Full Circle,” which will please fans and remind them of the Kweller they first loved.
“Go Fly a Kite” offers some tracks for devoted Kweller-ites, but, more importantly, it gives those listeners a new Kweller they’ll love equally.
