This week's campus discoveries

“Lightly enforced” campus smoking bans effective

Comparing IU and Purdue University hasn’t gotten old for School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation researchers.

A recently released report revealed that schools without smoking bans (Purdue) are not as effective at changing students’ attitudes toward smoking as schools with smoking bans (IU).

The study concluded that two-year, “lightly enforced” smoking bans contributed to a 3.7 percent decrease in student smokers.

Indiana exports set new record

The Indiana Business Research Center at the Kelley School of Business found that Indiana set a new record for exports, totaling $28.7 billion. Exports in 2010 increased from 2009 by 25.2 percent.

In 2009, Indiana’s exports decreased by 13.6 percent due to the nationwide economic downturn.

According to the report, Indiana’s exports increased more than the nation’s overall exports.

California study recognizes four IU faculty

A study conducted by the University of Southern California named four Kelley School of Business entrepreneur professors among the most influential in their field.

Professors Dean Shepherd, Patricia McDougall, Jeffrey Covin and Donald Kuratko published a total of 82 articles between 2005 and 2010.
