A man was arrested Wednesday after a gunshot broke the morning quiet in a southside neighborhood.
Skyler Ortiz, 25, was taken into custody following numerous neighbors’ reports of the sound of gunfire, said Sgt. Jeff Canada of the Bloomington Police Department.
Police responded to the calls around 4 a.m. in the 2300 block of South Winslow Court, Canada said. The neighbors were able point the officers to the residence where the sound of the single shot came from.
The officers knocked on the front door but received no answer, Canada said. They forced their way through the entrance and called to anyone inside the apartment.
Ortiz, dressed only in boxers, and a woman emerged from a bedroom.
Police searched the apartment and determined nobody was injured. In the bedroom closet, they found a black Century Arms AK47 semi-automatic rifle.
The woman who emerged with Ortiz told officers the rifle belonged to her and that she had bought it for protection, Canada said.
She also told the police she and Ortiz had gotten into an argument earlier in the night.
When she grew tired of the fight, she went to bed. She said she was later awoken by the gunshot in the bedroom.
She said Ortiz asked if she was okay before climbing into bed. She did not wake back up until the police forced their way through the front door, she told police. After his arrest, Ortiz refused to speak to police, Canada said.
He was charged with criminal recklessness with a firearm, a Class C felony.
Ortiz also faces additional charges of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, public intoxication and receiving stolen property from an arrest in May.
