“Killer Elite” is the action movie for the action movie lover. With its
overly generic title, underdeveloped characters, thin plot and tacked-on
romance, it’s everything you’re looking for in a bro’s night in.
The gore, high energy and hand-to-hand combat are great, but they are
interrupted by a useless, almost boring plot that isn’t as deep as it
thinks it is.
It was marketed as “a new type of action movie,” but it doesn’t deliver.
The character development is weak, basically following the “killer with
the heart of gold” archetype. Danny (Jason Statham) is a hired assassin
that is trying to get out of “the life” but has to do one final job for
his mentor, Hunter (Robert De Niro).
There are some political undertones meant to make a statement, but the
film is no “Munich.” The undertones mostly just break up the action.
What it lacks in plot and substance, it makes up for in cinematography.
The unique use of camera angles and lighting in many of the
“shoot-em-up” scenes propel the action and drive.
It won’t be up for any Oscars, but people get shot, stuff blows up and there’s blood. What else do you need in an action movie?
