Alpha Phi Alpha’s annual service initiative, Alpha Depot, brings greek organizations with the first letter alpha together for a day of service.
The fraternities and sororities will work with Habitat for Humanity from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday.
“This event was started back in 2009 by two members of Alpha Phi Alpha in hopes of bringing all the greek councils together to help us build a bond in service,” Alpha Phi Alpha member Michael Coleman said in an email. “Having a common bond with the first letter of each organization starting with alpha is what bonds us and established that we are natural leaders.”
Habitat for Humanity was the service organization that the greek organization knew could help, Coleman said in an email.
“Since the event’s inception, many students of different organizations have been exposed to Bloomington’s Habitat for Humanity and have done spring break trips with Habitat in New Orleans, helped get programs involved with Habitat in the summer and volunteering throughout the school year,” he said.
Coleman said he hopes the event continues to grow.
“This service initiative is something we hope progresses so that it may become bigger and better,” he said.
