FreshmenGo! to discount tickets

On Saturday, the seats of the Musical Arts Center were filled with more freshmen than the average IU opera performance.

In an attempt to interest new students in IU’s artistic offerings, the Jacobs School of Music, Residential Programs and Services and IU First Year Experience Programs teamed up to provide reduced ticket prices via a new plan.

“We’re hoping to give students an opportunity to access these cultural events, which they may not have had access to before coming to IU,” said Alain Barker, director of marketing and publicity for the Jacobs School of Music.

The FreshmanGo! program offers new students the opportunity to attend various musical and artistic events for a $10 ticket.

Before the Mozart opera, “Cosi fan tutte,” the Jacobs school offered a reception for those taking advantage of the program. According to Barker, at least 50 freshmen were scheduled to attend the event.

“Just to see their fellow students in productions really makes them more accessible, particularly given the quality of those programs on campus,” said Denise Gowin, associate director of academic initiatives and services within RPS.

Although all students can attend an opera for $10, they are restricted to the third floor balcony of the MAC. FreshmanGo! offers students the same price but with prime, front seats.

“The production values are so amazing, and it looks so beautiful,” Barker said. “There’s something for everyone.”

Besides the fall opera, FreshmanGo! also offers students the opportunity to attend the spring ballet, “The Sleeping Beauty.” David Baker’s jazz band and orchestra concerts will also be included.

Gowin said she hopes the program will introduce students to the various events the University offers.

“It gives them the opportunity to appreciate these things early in their life so they can develop and cultivate their interests throughout their life,” Gowin said. “I think it opens doors to other opportunities.”

Barker said many students simply had no access to such events in their hometowns. He also said by taking advantage of reduced prices, freshmen can experience a show and decide whether they will return in the future.
