After two straight losses, Hoosiers build off weekend mistakes

After a week of back-to-back losses, the field hockey team is ready to move on.

The team, which fell to both Stanford and California while visiting the West Coast last week, will continue its road trip at 4 p.m. today against UC Davis in Oxford, Ohio.

IU, sitting at 4-2 after an undefeated start, is focused on rebounding.

“We’ve looked at video, trying to learn better how to manipulate our opponents and use our structure to our advantage, and we made a couple key changes, I think, in some places,” IU Coach Amy Robertson said. “I don’t want to expand on it and give it away, but let’s just suffice it to say this past weekend exposed a couple things for us that we can move forward and improve upon.”

In their first four games of the season, the Hoosiers dominated their opponents in offense, out-shooting their competition 74-31 and outscoring them 14-3.

In the last two games, IU gave up 25 shots and six goals, scoring just three goals on 13 shots.

Senior back Brenna Moeljadi, one of the team’s captains, wants the team to use past success to get back to winning.

“I just think taking the weekend that we had in California and just trying to learn from our mistakes, trying to move forward,” Moeljadi said. “Especially focusing on what we did in the first four matches that were really positive and trying to focus on that instead of all the negative.”

With four goals and two Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week awards this season, Moeljadi, along with other senior veterans, will lead the team during the game.

“If our team does break our confidence and if we have a lot of lulls in the game, (we have) to keep up the energy and stay positive and be consistent,” said Moeljadi.
