Five people were found dead in southeastern Indiana on Sunday in suspicious circumstances.
Police responded to a call reporting that a child was wandering alone on a road in rural Franklin County near Laurel, Ind. Passers-by noticed the child and stopped to make sure the child was okay.
There were no adults around, so the passers-by called the police and remained with the child, according to a press release from the Indiana State Police. A deputy police officer arrived, and after talking with the child and neighbors in the area, called for backup.
The state police discovered the body of a dead male in one house nearby and four other bodies — two males and two females — in a house across the street.
The victims appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.
The state police said in the release that law enforcement is still trying to figure out exactly what happened at the two locations.
The police said they did not know if there were one or multiple shooters. They also would not say if the shooter was among the dead found in the two houses.
The police are not releasing any information about the deceased until the families of the deceased are notified.
