Seventy-six police officers will be directing traffic today for the University’s official move-in day, IU Police Chief Keith Cash said.
“Everyone works,” Cash said. “We have our 46 full-time officers working with our 30 new graduates from IU’s own police academy.”
While there will be additional congestion on campus because of students moving into dorms, the police’s primary concern is road construction, Cash said.
“It is my understanding that this week will have the largest freshman class coming into town,” he said. “The biggest hurdle with move-in, of course, is not necessarily the numbers. It is the fact that there is always a major construction project delaying traffic flow.”
IUPD will work to move traffic quickly, but students should be aware that there are areas that will delay traffic flow, Cash said.
“Right now, the bypass is the biggest problem,” he said. “If folks can find alternative routes, that would be beneficial. Also, there is construction on a new building on the Northeast side of the Third Street and Jordan Avenue intersection.”
To ease the troubles of getting into town, the best two things students can do are to plan alternative routes to campus and plan on leaving early, Cash said.
Early move-in has also helped reduce congestion, Cash said.
“The last two years, it has helped dramatically because a great number of folks move in Sunday, Monday and Tuesday,” he said. “Then, by the official move-in on Wednesday, there is much less of a burden.”
