Following the musical career of Spencer Krug is sort of like getting on a ride at Universal Studios Florida.
Stay with me.
If you’ve ever been to USF you know about all the great themed rides they have there, like the “King Kong”, “Jaws” and “Alien” rides.
The rides seem great and maybe even a tier better than those you might find at your average amusement park because they’re wrapped up in not only taking you on a wild ride, but also in giving you some sort of narrative to wonder over.
They’re thrilling and everything, but here’s what I’m getting at: In the end, you don’t feel like you were part of the movie or understand the plot any better.
You just realize some shmucks shamelessly took the name of a popular title, crammed in some mechanical monsters and took your money.
Anyway. Moonface is Krug’s new moniker.
Like many of his efforts in the past, “Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I’d Hoped” panders with narrative and flirts with the idea of telling a story.
But, instead, he just borrows one-liners, dresses them up as songs and draws them out to eight or nine minute organ jams with no hooks in sight and nothing to hold on to.
Some songs do actually have their share of hypnotic moments and swirling sound (“Return to the Violence of the Ocean Floor”).
This reviewer, though, just can’t swallow the overwhelming feeling that parallels stepping off the “Jaws” ride and realizing that it wasn’t half as good as you hoped it’d be.
