Carmel High School defensive end Shawn Heffern commits to IU

Defensive end Shawn Heffern committed to IU on Monday, becoming the 16th member of the football recruiting class of 2012.

Heffern, from Carmel High School, is listed at 6 feet, 6 inches and 240 pounds. He is the second defensive end in the 2012 class for the Hoosiers, joining New Castle Chrysler High School’s Adam Kranda.

Heffern chose IU over offers from Purdue University and several schools in the Mid-American Conference.

Carmel High School now has three players in the class of 2012 committed to colleges in major conferences, including linebacker Jimmy Herman to Purdue and Heffern’s fellow defensive end Langston Newton to Kentucky. IU also offered Newton.
