WU LYF isn’t what it sounds like.
It’s not an online blog for white hipster kids to talk about their favorite rap group from
the 90s.
It is World Unite! Lucifer Youth Foundation — a self-described ‘heavy pop’ band from Manchester, England whose first official release, “Go Tell Fire to the Mountain,” has set the internet blogosphere ablaze.
Until a week ago, WU LYF was shrouded in mystery. Prior to this release, members of the band kept their identity a secret and refused to release any information or schedule interviews with the press.
In the mission statement on WU LYF’s website, the band claims to be “a non-for-profit organization anchored to the concrete truths of unconditioned youth,” encouraging petty theft and détournment in a society versus WU LYF opposition.
The band mixes an innovative brand of Explosions in the Sky instrumentation with a vocalist that would likely cite Joe Strummer and Isaac Brock as weighty influences, culminating in moving, cinematic post-punk anthems.
Squeaky-clean guitar lines plus lightly buried organ chords combined with thrifty, yet powerful drumming drive each song.
Standout tracks include “Cave Song,” “We Bros” and “Concrete Gold.” There isn’t a single weak effort to be found on the entire album.
With “Go Tell Fire to the Mountain,” WU LYF ensure themselves a spot in the indie world spotlight for at least the foreseeable future.
If the strength of their debut is any indication of the quality of future releases, though, you may be hearing about them for much longer than that.
