Multitalented IU junior Derek Drouin launched the outdoor season for the IU track and field squad at the Big Ten/SEC Challenge.
Drouin finished the competition by winning two events, helping the Big Ten take the challenge on the men’s side as the Big Ten defeated the SEC conference with a score of 399-337.
The women also garnered a challenge victory with a score of 379-349, as Indiana accounted for 102.5 points of the 379 total.
Drouin took the high jump that included a field with four All-Americans, with a clearance of 2.23-meters. He also won in the 110-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.31 seconds.
“I was in a slow heat, and I had to get back over to the high jump,” Drouin said. “I didn’t know until later that I won. It was great in the first meet to win.”
On the women’s side, senior Faith Sherrill won the shot put with a heave of 16.92-meters, and senior Vera Neuenswander took the pole vault victory with a clearance of 4.10-meters.
The Hoosiers also competed at the Stanford Invitational during the weekend, where sophomore Andrew Poore clocked an IU record in the 10K with a time of 28:48.02 but fell short with a fifth place finish.
