Baseball in pop culture

ed

Pitcher
”Major League”: Before he played a commercial jingle writer version of himself on television, Charlie Sheen was playing a baseball player version of himself as Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn. Tiger blood not yet included.

Catcher
“Bull Durham”: The one where Kevin Costner plays an older, wiser hero with a heart of gold, you know? Wait...

First base
“Who’s on First?” by Abbott and Costello: The famous comedy skit that, with its lack of any will for clarity, never fails to be totally obnoxious.

Second base
The father of all great sex-baseball metaphors and a cornerstone of sexual puns in baseball film.

Third base
“Ed”: An unbelievably bad baseball movie that has a chimp playing third and stars Matt LeBlanc. And it sounded so promising.

Shortstop
Mariah Carey (when she was young), a former Miss Universe, Jordana Brewster, Vanessa Minnillo, Jessica Biel and Minka Kelly — aka the dating history of Derek Jeter.

Center field
“Centerfield” by John Fogerty: George W. Bush’s favorite song and surprisingly devoid of sexual undertones.

Left field
“Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game” by Michael M. Lewis:  Billy Beane and the A’s were thought to have had a “left field” sort of view at the time; the controversial book converted a lot of haters.

Right field
“Right Field,” the poem by Willy Welch, and “Right Field,” the song by Peter, Paul & Mary: Poem of the same name that turned into a nice little song by the same people who brought us “Puff (The Magic Dragon).”
