Awards dinner celebrates fundraiser

The Residence Halls Association, partnered with Building Tomorrow, will sponsor the Buy a Brick Awards Dinner tonight to honor the residence halls that participated in the Buy a Brick campaign.

Ten residence halls participated in the campaign during February, selling Lego pieces for $1 to build a school in Uganda through Building Tomorrow.

Building Tomorrow is a student-led, nonprofit organization that builds primary schools in Uganda, said junior Grant Lin, Building Tomorrow’s IU chapter president and junior.
“We want to bring awareness to IU students so that they can be a global citizen,” Lin said. “There are 41 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa that don’t attend primary school. This money is going to make an impact.”

RHA chose to support this organization because education is an important aspect of being in college, RHA Director of Philanthropy Amanda King said.

“Because we are pursuing a higher education here, we thought students would be more supportive to dedicate funds and time to the organization,” King said. “We, as IU students, should think about the world-wide community as a whole and think about the different kinds of education in different worlds.”

The top three residence halls that raised the most money for Building Tomorrow, Teter, Eigenmann, and Read, will be honored at the dinner.

Overall, the residence halls raised about $1,600.

The awards dinner will take place in the Indiana Memorial Union Alumni Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $20, and the event is open to the public. All the money will benefit the Building Tomorrow organization.
