State treasurer may run for U.S. Senate

Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock recently announced that he has made and will soon reveal his decision whether or not to challenge U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar in the 2012 Republican primary.

Lugar served as the mayor of Indianapolis from 1968 to 1976 and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1976.

In 2009, Mourdock fought unsuccessfully against the Chrysler bankruptcy government intervention. His campaign took him to the U.S. Supreme Court and he gained much attention for his views.

Republican club President Barb Knochel told the Bloomington Herald-Times that, among other things, Lugar’s age meant it was time for someone new.

“Richard Lugar served us for many years, but some people think it’s time for a change. He will be 80 next year,” Knochel said in a Herald-Times article.
