Hoosiers throttle No. 37 DePaul, Cleveland State

Women's Tennis vs. Cleveland State

When No. 34 DePaul faced No. 47 IU on Friday, it was clear which team was dominant.
It was the lower-ranked Hoosiers.

The Hoosiers won two of three doubles matches and all six singles matches in straight sets to defeat the Blue Demons 7-0.

IU coach Lin Loring said DePaul was missing its No. 2 player, which contributed to the lopsided margin.

“Anybody that’s top-50 in the country, if you take out one of your top four players, it just totally changes your doubles. Everyone has to play up higher in singles,” Loring said. “I’m pretty confident we would’ve still beaten them, but it wouldn’t have been quite this score.”

For IU senior Myriam Sopel, who won her No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-0, the win was even sweeter since DePaul beat the Hoosiers the past two seasons. She said IU’s 4-3 loss to DePaul two years ago was the turning point of the season and might have kept the Hoosiers out of the NCAA tournament.

“Two years in a row, losing against the same team, you really want to beat them the third year, so we’re pretty happy about that,” Sopel said. “Especially since I’m a senior, so finishing against DePaul 7-0, that’s pretty satisfying.”

The Hoosiers followed the win against the Blue Demons with a 7-0 victory against Cleveland State on Sunday, improving their season record to 9-2.
