Former IU student pleads guilty to sexual battery, rape charges dropped

Hai “Howie” Yu, a former IU student charged with raping another student last March, pleaded guilty to sexual battery and criminal confinement when he appeared in court this afternoon. His rape charges were dropped.

According to police reports, Yu dragged a woman into the Foster Residence Center the night of March 11, 2010. Police said they have video footage of Yu dragging the same woman, who was not moving under her own power, out of the building about an hour later. This time, she was naked from the waist down.

After a witness saw Yu and the woman near Foster, she called 911. Police transported the victim to the Bloomington Hospital, where she was treated for injuries and completed a rape kit.

Before the change in plea, Yu’s case was scheduled to go before a jury starting March 7. He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 24.
