The newly appointed musical director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra now has another job for his resume.
Krzysztof Urbanski, 28, is now an adjunct professor of music in orchestral conducting. Urbanski, who hails from Poland, will join both staffs next fall.
His appointment as music director of the symphony orchestra makes him the youngest director of a major U.S. orchestra, and he is also the first music director to join the Jacobs School of Music staff.
The conductor graduated from the Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw in 2007. The same year he became the first prize winner of the Prague Spring International Conducting Competition.
Before Urbanski assumes his position, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will perform Jan. 9, 2011 in the Musical Arts Center. The program will include the premiere of Chancellor’s professor of music Claude Baker’s work “Concerto for Piano: Noon to Starry Night.”
“We welcome this opportunity to associate with one of the young talents of the international conducting world as part of our evolving relationship with the Indianapolis Symphony,” said Gwyn Richards, Jacobs School of Music dean in a press release.
“Krzysztof’s youthfulness, musicianship and international scope herald a defining moment in the evolution of the orchestra,” she said.
