The results of Indiana’s statewide, 18-day crackdown on impaired driving from Aug. 20 to Sept. 19 resulted in 66 more arrests than last year.
There were 875 alcohol related arrests in the 18 day span, according to a press release issued by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
Officers employed the use of sobriety checkpoints and high visibility patrols to detect these drivers on Indiana roadways.
“More than 8,800 alcohol-related collisions occurred on Indiana’s roadways in 2009, resulting in 168 fatalities,” according to the release.
Law enforcement agencies worked 11,000 hours of overtime in the enforcement effort.
Almost 12,000 people died in alcohol related crashes in 2008, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
