Former IU golfer Overton finishes 2-2 at Ryder Cup

Former IU golfer Jeff Overton did his part Monday morning for the US golf team, but Europe prevailed to narrowly win the Ryder Cup in a rain-delayed event in Newport, Wales.

While the Europeans edged out a 14.5-13.5 victory against the Americans following 12 singles matches, Overton — a 2005 IU graduate and rookie team member this year — defeated Ross Fisher 3 and 2 in an early-morning contest.

Overton finished the weekend winning two and losing two matches. Against Fisher, Overton fell behind two holes on the front nine but rallied to even the match by hole 12 and won holes 13, 14 and 16 to end the match three up.

On Friday, Overton won the fourballs pairing with teammate Bubba Watson. Watson and Overton dropped a foursomes match on Saturday and a fourballs match on Sunday before Overton turned to singles play for his final victory.
