Operation Hoosier Thunder’s commitment to crack down on illegal marijuana growers in Southern Indiana went into effect last month and involved the convergence of Indiana State Police, the Indiana National Guard Counter Drug Task Force, the DEA, U.S. Forest Service, Civil Air Patrol, Indiana DNR and local law enforcement agencies.
According to a press release issued by the Indiana State Police Public Information Officer, Sergeant Chad D. Dick, “This effort was in response to ongoing intelligence of illegal drug trafficking operations illegally growing marijuana on public property like the Hoosier National Forrest and other remote state and federally owned property.”
Operation Hoosier Thunder utilized Blackhawk helicopters along with ground teams in the search efforts. Despite the concentration of the southern portions of the state, marijuana eradication efforts have been continuing state-wide.
According to the release, 19,000 marijuana plants have been eradicated with an estimated street value of $47,500,000.
