Looking for something to do? Want to get off campus? Don’t have a lot of money?
The Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau can help students explore Bloomington.
It is the official travel information resource, Director of Tourism Rob Decleene said.
He said he believes there are many things for students to do and see in Bloomington and encourages them to take advantage of it.
“Go explore,” he said. “Don’t just limit yourself to campus.”
For students not wanting to spend much money, the Starlite Drive-In Theatre is an off-campus option. At 7640 S. Old State Road 37, it is an old-fashioned outdoor movie theater where you can watch movies from lawn chairs or from inside your car.
The theater has movies playing every weekend April through October. Tickets are $7 for adults to watch two movies beneath the stars, and there is a concession stand for refreshments.
At 308 W. Fourth St., WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology is closer to campus for students without a vehicle.
“It’s a great museum,” DeCleene said. “It’s definitely not just for kids.”
The museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults aged 18 and older and $6 for ages 1 to 17.
WonderLab’s Marketing Director Louise Schlesinger said students tend to enjoy the Grapevine Climber, a two-story 3D maze; the Vertical Leap, which has an IU basketball theme; the Heat Camera, through which you can see internal spots; the Animation Station, with which you can create a short animation; the Pinscreen, against which you press your body into a screen to see a 3D version of yourself; and the Bubble-Airium, which includes multiple exhibits involving bubbles.

Griffy Lake Nature Preserve is another location close to IU for those wanting to experience more of the great outdoors. It’s located at 3300 N. Headley Road.
There, at the Griffy Lake Boathouse, kayaks, canoes and boats are available to rent for $6 per hour. Hiring a nature guide is available for $1 per hour. There are also four different hiking trails.
The boathouse is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends in April and October and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily May through September.
LaserLite Laser Tag, 4505 E. Third St., is another option for students looking to do something different.
It offers specials such as $20 unlimited play Thursday and “Tag ’till You Drag” for $18 from 9 a.m. to midnight Friday, which consists of three hours of unlimited play. There is also an arcade inside.
LaserLite is open 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight Friday, noon to midnight Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. It is closed Monday through Wednesday, except for reservations.
