City reminds citizens of noise ordinance

Now that students have finally moved into their homes, the City of Bloomington’s Safe and Civil City Program has released a statement to remind all citizens of the noise ordinance.

Quiet Nights and Lower the Boooom are two City of Bloomington initiatives developed to set noise ordinances for the community.

Quiet Nights is a program that enforces stationary or fixed-source noise.

Lower the Boooom is a program that reminds drivers of boom cars to lower their stereo volume and provides information concerning the health and safety risks of using boom speakers.

“Unreasonable noise is defined as sound that is of a volume, frequency or pattern that prevents, disrupts, injures or endangers the health, safety, welfare, prosperity, comfort or repose of reasonable persons of ordinary sensitivities within the city of Bloomington, given the time of day or environment in which the sound is made,” according to a City of Bloomington press release.

First time offenders might receive a warning from police. However, if a citation is issued the fine is $50. The fine for a second citation is $100 and the fine for a third citation and all other violations within a year is $500 each.

Citations might be issued for noise coming from a vehicle or a residence.
