Two IU students were arrested for allegedly breaking into cars after they ran from police.
Daniel Emanuel and William D. Ryan, ages 18, were in the 10th Street parking lot by the Student Recreational Sports Center opening car doors and stealing various items amounting to an estimated $500, according to an IU Police Department report read by Lt. Craig Munroe. The two were in the process of searching cars when IUPD Officer Garth Vanleeuwen turned off his squad car headlights and drove through the parking lot, according to the report.
Once Emanuel and Ryan noticed the squad car, they began to walk before breaking into a run northbound across the railroad tracks. As other IUPD officers joined Vanleeuwen in the chase, the suspects were outnumbered and tackled to the ground.
Emanuel and Ryan were both charged with theft, larceny, unauthorized entry, criminal mischief and resisting law enforcement. Emanuel was also given preliminary charges of possession of paraphernalia, and Ryan was charged with possession
of marijuana.
