Art exhibit features floral arrangements

Art in Bloom

Flowers of all shapes, sizes and colors filled the IU Art Museum this weekend for its second Art in Bloom exhibition.

The exhibit consisted of a two-day flower show that contained floral exhibits from 12 different members of the Bloomington Garden Club.

Their task was to create a floral arrangement that was consistent with the color and texture of an original artwork from one of the museum’s galleries. The arrangement was paired with a picture of the original work.

Members gathered inspiration from a range of artistic styles from all around the globe. Nita Horrar chose an ink on paper piece by Japanese artist Gibon Sengai named “Chrysanthemum.” Horrar combined both the literal object of white chrysanthemums with a black base with an asymmetrical base to capture the true essence of the impressionism in Sengai’s work.

Other artists who served as inspiration for the floral arrangers included Jackson Pollock, Gustave Caillebotte and Fernand Leger.

“I thought it was an interesting idea, and it’s nice that it brought a lot of new people into the museum,” junior Raine Odle said. “In the future, it could be really neat to see if it was organized better, maybe in a gallery by itself, and incorporated the designers more into the exhibit.”
