WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Six members of the women’s team earned a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester. Hoosiers earning this distinction include junior Danilsa Andujar, sophomore Jasmine Davis, senior Jori Davis, junior Lindsay Enterline, junior Georgie Jones and now-graduate Andrea McGuirt.
This follows a fall semester in which five Hoosiers were honored, including Andujar, then-freshman Sasha Chaplin, Davis, Enterline and McGuirt.
“I am so proud of the academic effort put forth by our team,” IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack said. “Our young ladies pushed themselves and were able to get great results. ‘Character first, academics second, and then basketball’ will continue to be our motto.”
The Hoosiers also earned several other individual academic accolades during the 2009-10 school year. Andujar and Jones both earned IU Scholar-Athletes of the month in February and April, respectively. McGuirt finished her undergraduate career with numerous academic awards, as she graduated with an accounting degree in three years. She was named the 2009-2010 IU Scholastic Achievement honoree for the women’s basketball team and plans to use her remaining eligibility to attend graduate school in the Kelley School of Business.
“The team had a strong finish to the semester,” said Kelly Noonan, IU Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Development Services. “Every player made positive strides in their classes, and it was great to see them focused and determined at the end of the stretch. This team continually shows dedication to academics, which is reflected in their Big Ten and IU accolades.”
FOOTBALL
Former Hoosier quarterback Dave Schnell was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame on Friday.
Prior to his joining the Hoosiers in the 1985-86 season, Sports Illustrated ranked Schnell as the No. 1 high school player in the nation. Schnell was a four-year letter winner for the Hoosiers and was the starting quarterback for three seasons. While at IU, he earned honors as the 1988 Liberty Bowl MVP and Offensive MVP, and he was the ABC Sports’ Chevy Player of the Game for a 1988 match against the Hawkeyes.
Schnell also remains the only IU quarterback to beat both Ohio State and Michigan in the same season.
VOLLEYBALL
The Hoosiers started their European tour with a win, defeating the Czech Youth National Team. After losing the opening set, the Hoosiers were able to resurge and win the match 3-1. IU’s second match, on May 24, is against Nova KBM Branik of Maribor. The team will have five remaining matches after Monday.
