Well, this is it.
It’s been four months of time well spent on Taylor Swift swipes and thinking of new ways to work Justin Bieber’s hair into every column.
And unlike Bieber’s coif, we must part.
However, I can’t end this series without checking my music predictions I made at the beginning of the column, because I believe if there’s anything to get from this column, it should be that I’m always right.
I predicted Lady Gaga would rule 2010, and by the amount of pop cans I’ve been rolling my hair with, I would have to concur. Lady Gaga’s “The Fame Monster” is still pumping out hits such as “Telephone,” and even Christina Aguilera has been channeling her inner Gaga in her new song, “Not myself Tonight.” Or maybe she just has a penchant for leather and studs.
I mentioned Drake would have a successful 2010. His new track, “Over,” and the hype surrounding his awaited album, “Thank Me Later,” prove he is on the right track. The next challenge for Drake is to take his early success with “So Far Gone” and translate it to his debut studio album. If this album fails to impress, Drake might not have two feet to stand on — a bad sign for a former Canadian teen soap actor who just got out of wheelchair scenes.
My third prediction was that Lil Wayne would take a break from his tedious schedule of backing up his release of “Rebirth” and recalibrate his skills. Well, the state of New York has accommodated that prediction with a cell on Rikers Island. Even though Wayne has been detained for little more than a month, his posts on his website, weezythanxyou.com, show a stable and clear-headed man with plenty of time to write material that will make “Prom Queen” seem similar to a very bad, punk-drenched nightmare.
Yes, I am awesome, but what’s great about these predictions is what they have in common. It shows that music leaves room for progress. Who’s considered edgy and ahead of the game today will be outdated or Limp Bizkit by tomorrow.
This column has been about enjoying music for what it is now and the possibilities it could take on individually. It’s never been about my preferences as much as it has been about music as an art form — the art that fills the space between your walks to class, forms the background of a party or takes center stage at one of your favorite shows.
One day you may forget Taylor Swift cheated out so many people for the Album of the Year Grammy that even Tiger Woods was impressed. Or you may forget who just wrote that obvious punch line. But as long as you stop every now and then to appreciate the music around you, I call that a job well done.
